Citizen Science Checklist

Are you currently working on a concept for a Citizen Science project and wondering whether you have thought of everything you need to make your project fully effective? Or are you already in the middle of your research work and want to know what you can implement now to get the most out of your project? Then we have a helpful tool for you: The Citizen Science Checklist!

Building on the Swiss Citizen Science Principles, Schweiz forscht and Citizen Science Zurich have jointly developed an interactive checklist to support you in planning and implementing participatory research projects. The checklist offers reflection questions that encourage you to think about core elements of participatory project design, tips and hints for implementation as well as further information and links to helpful resources.

At the start of the project, the checklist provides a structured framework for clarifying key questions within the management team and obtaining the different perspectives, motivations and expectations of those involved: What added value does the project offer for citizen scientists and for researchers? What requirements do participants need to fulfill to participate and what barriers can possibly be removed? Have resources been considered to promote collaboration and communication? How can the project be evaluated and on the basis of which criteria?

Even at a later stage, even if you are already in the middle of your research, it is helpful to address these issues and take measures to improve the quality of your project.

How the checklist came to be

As part of the Citizen Science Initiative of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences 2021-24 (ICSA+), the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences, Science et Cité (with the Swiss Citizen Science Network Schweiz forscht) and Citizen Science Zurich, in collaboration with Citizen Cyberlab Geneva, have developed a proposal for Swiss Citizen Science Principles to create a common basis and guidance for the Swiss Citizen Science community.

This checklist is based on the 10 Swiss Citizen Science Principles and was developed jointly by Citizen Science Zurich and Schweiz forscht. The idea for the joint development came about as part of the course "Citizen Science II: From Theory to Practice" (University of Zurich, School for Transdisciplinary Studies, SS 2023). The participating students formulated the 10 Swiss Citizen Science Principles into application-oriented questions in order to check project planning based on the principles. The checklist was further developed on this basis. This was followed by a test phase in which we received valuable feedback from testers, which was incorporated into the final version. We see the checklist as a tool that we want to continuously develop further based on the experiences of users. We look forward to your feedback at info@citizenscience.ch and cs@science-et-cite.ch.

Many thanks to all contributors!
