The growing use of AI tools like ChatGPT is changing how students write. These programs can generate meaningful and grammatically correct texts in collaboration with users, presenting new challenges for teaching and writing support. However, little is known about how these tools are actually used and what skills are needed for effective application. This project, in collaboration with students and teachers, explores how AI is used in writing and identifies the key competencies required for practical use.
The project adds a practical perspective to the research field of AI literacy, focusing on the skills needed to interact with artificial intelligence. It highlights the everyday users and their language usage, a viewpoint that has been largely overlooked in this research context. By collaborating with schools, the project also provides educational materials to enhance the understanding of AI across various subjects, not just in technical fields. This approach aims to help students comprehend and utilize AI technologies more effectively. In turn, it promotes broader societal awareness and under-standing of AI literacy, enabling more people to engage with AI competently and critically.
During conceptual phase, project participants meet to discuss the setting and writing arrangements. Together, they define the writing environment and commission the programming of the necessary tools. Afterwards, students conduct their writing projects, with their processes digitally documented to collect data for analyzing writing practices. Then students analyze their writing processes and the collected data in workshops. These workshops are supported by student writing consultants and researchers to incorporate diverse perspectives. The collected findings are presented and discussed in a final event, where the required competencies for writing with AI are outlined. Later, a scientific paper summarizing the study’s findings is written. Additionally, a professional develop-ment program based on the project results is developed.
One class from each of the Enge and Rämibühl MNG high schools actively participates in the writing projects and workshops. They use AI tools and analyze their writing processes in collaboration with the research team. Their involvement provides practical insights and empirical data for AI literacy research. In the process, students become familiar with scientific methods and reflect on their use of AI in writing. All participants contribute their perspectives and expertise to the research findings, which will be incorporated into training programs and guidelines.
